About William S. Holland Middle School - celebrating the legacy of William S. Holland and his contributions to education and civil rights in Houston:

William S. Holland Middle School stands as a lasting tribute to the remarkable life and legacy of Professor William Sylvester Holland—an educator, coach, principal, and civil rights advocate whose impact shaped generations of students and transformed public education in Houston. Named in his honor, our school is dedicated to carrying forward his vision of excellence, equity, and community uplift.

Born in 1904 in Terre Haute, Indiana, William S. Holland, affectionately known as “Babe” for his athletic talents, devoted his life to the pursuit of educational and social justice. After distinguished achievements in sports and academics, Holland began his career as a teacher and coach before coming to Houston in 1927. As a pioneering African-American coach and later principal of Jack Yates High School, Holland set a standard of both academic and athletic excellence. Under his leadership, Yates became a pillar of the Third Ward community, known not only for strong sports teams but also for rigorous academics and a deep commitment to student success.

Throughout his career, Holland was a courageous voice for equality. He fought tirelessly for fair pay for Black educators, for equitable resources for Black students—including new books, supplies, and facilities—and for the dignity of all students, such as ensuring Black marching bands were no longer relegated to the back of parades. His leadership inspired students to strive for greatness, reminding them that success required hard work, integrity, and resilience.

In 1979, William S. Holland Middle School was dedicated to honor his decades of service to the Houston community and his steadfast advocacy for educational equity. Today, Holland Middle School proudly serves the students of Houston’s East Side, striving to uphold his values by fostering academic achievement, civic responsibility, and the belief that every child has the potential to lead and make a difference.

At Holland Middle School, we are committed to preparing students to become thoughtful, engaged citizens who, like our namesake, use their talents to overcome obstacles and contribute to a better world.
