Grading and Mastery Opportunities at Holland Middle School
At Holland Middle School, we believe all students deserve the opportunity to demonstrate their understanding and grow academically. If a student receives a failing grade on a class assignment, such as a Demonstration of Learning (DOL) or other teacher-assigned task, they will have up to one week to revisit the assignment and show improved mastery of the concept.

For example, if a student earns a low grade on a DOL, they may improve their grade by demonstrating understanding during structured learning time (LSAE) that follows.

Student grades are based on a variety of learning activities throughout the grading period. Teachers consider all relevant evidence when assessing mastery of academic standards. This may include:

  • Performance on district assessments

  • Demonstrations of Learning (DOLs)

  • LSAE work (required at least twice per six weeks in Math and Reading)

  • Classwork and teacher-created assignments

  • Projects aligned with academic standards

  • Teacher observations of student progress

Teachers also provide clear expectations, continuous feedback, and individual support to help every student succeed. Documentation of student progress is available to families upon request, and we encourage open communication to support your child’s growth and achievement.
